RECREATION IS REFRESHING AND REVITALIZING
What is life without joy and passion? Sometimes when individuals and family systems are fighting the battle for renewed mental health, ensuring the presence of enjoyable experiences and playfulness with one another can fall by the wayside. Ironically, those experiencing psychological distress require recreation more than anyone. At Northwest Passage, our team works to get to know each client as an individual, including their interests and hobbies. A concerted effort to work each youth’s interests into their treatment is made precisely because of the knowledge that building enjoyable experiences into each and every day is how to begin to build a life that our kids want to wake up to each morning. Concurrently, staff members are encouraged to bring their personal passions to work to share their joy with one another and expand the horizons of the children with whom they work. Like the other therapeutic lifestyle choices, recreation is one that often will overlap with others including service, exercise, and time in nature.

THE ART OF BEING MENTALLY HEALTHY
- Good mental health or being ‘mentally healthy’ can be defined as a state of well-being whereby an individual is able to contribute to their community, cope with the stresses of everyday life, is able to realize their potential and work productively.
- Encouraging the population to “shift” their behavior to encourage well-being is a common strategy in the public health literature as this approach can benefit more individuals (overall) than targeting only high risk individuals.
- Emotional gains [are] likely to accrue once an individual attained a certain level of understanding and knowledge about an art-form, activity or event.
